An elegant Asian fusion restaurant called Kuroshio (kuh-ROH-shee-oh) has opened in downtown Ann Arbor, offering sushi and a diverse, upscale dinner menu.

Recent University of Michigan graduate Alan Wang, 22, is managing the restaurant for his parents, owners Kenneth Wang and Grace Chen. The senior Wang — who immigrated to Ann Arbor with his family in the early ’90s — is a retired international businessman; this is the family’s first experience in the restaurant business, Alan Wang said this week.

“My dad has eaten at a lot of restaurants around the globe, and he has always had his own ideal version of what a restaurant should be,” he said. “For the past two or three years, he has been looking for a place to open a restaurant, and we found one in our own hometown of Ann Arbor.”

The story behind the name

A direct translation from Japanese to English for ‘Kuroshio’ is black salt. Black salt is sea salt that has been harvested from various places in the world and blended with activated charcoal. In addition to its beautiful presentation, it is said to have detoxifying effects on the body. Similarly at Kuroshio, not only do we pride ourselves on serving wholesome foods made from the best and freshest ingredients, but also on presenting meticulously crafted and elegant dishes.

Moreover, the Kuroshio Current is the western boundary current that hugs the east coast of the Asian continent and flows north along the western coast of Japan similar to how the Gulf Stream current hugs the east coast of the North American continent. The Kuroshio current mixes nutrient-rich warm water and oxygen-rich cold water providing ideal conditions for life in the sea. This current flows through the eastern Asian nations where the inspiration for most of our foods come from and is where most of our seafood originates.

Kuroshio exemplifies the blending and joining of both similar and disparate regions to create memorable flavors and experiences. Kuroshio’s cuisine will focus on the freshest ingredients, artistic and elegant presentation, experimental Asian foods, and great service. Small carefully crafted plates will also be featured and paired with signature cocktails and Asian drinks.

We look forward to providing you with a delightful and memorable dining experience.
